This will be the first commercial-scale plant to produce second-generation ethanol from biomass.
On 10 January, Manuel Sánchez Ortega visited the site where the Hugoton project is being developed, in the State of Kansas, USA.
The reason for the visit was to observe the advances in the project. He also had the opportunity to attend the Hugoton committee meeting in person and to meet with the Abengoa Bioenergy and Abeinsa EPC project managers.
After working for 10 years on R+D projects and programmes, Abengoa developed Hugoton, the first commercial-scale plant to produce second-generation ethanol from biomass.
The main contractor, Abeinsa EPC, anticipates that construction will take 24 months, during which time 500 direct jobs are expected to be generated in the area. On completion, the plant will have a production capacity of 100 million litres of clean, sustainable cellulosic ethanol per year. It will generate a further 65 jobs once it is in operation.
